I recently posted my thoughts on traveling solo as a single woman and wanted to write a bit more about it since it’s been a hot topic for me lately!
I’ve been conversing with other solo travelers (both men and women) as well as friends who have never traveled alone before. For those who haven’t yet had the luxury of solo travel, they say it’s because of various reasons including fear, insecurity, inadequacy and loneliness.
In my opinion, solo travel is the best way to build and strengthen your self esteem, confidence and security within yourself (especially as a woman!) and is the ultimate form of self-love! It is so rewarding once you overcome your fears and just do it!
As a solo traveler, I can tell you (from my experience) that it is one of the BEST gifts you can give yourself. I used to be terrified of traveling alone and was so intimidated by just the thought of it. I used to think, how could anyone not want to share the experience of travel, and seeing the world with someone else? I would admire people who were brave and courageous enough to do it, particularly women traveling alone, but was always afraid of doing it myself.
But now, with a few major solo journeys and world experiences under my belt, I prefer to travel alone. I can do what I want, when I want. I put myself out there, sometimes in situations that I never normally would, to meet new people, which isn’t as easy to do when I have a travel buddy. I create my own experiences. I need only to worry about me. When I get lonely or crave some company, I reach out to friends and other solo travelers that I’ve met along the way. Also, the power of social media when traveling alone is amazing! Even when you’re traveling alone, you are never really alone. My own solo travel experiences have created a sense of freedom that is so empowering, liberating and freeing, ESPECIALLY as a single woman.
It is important however to be mindful when traveling solo (I.e. I don’t put myself in situations where I could get myself into trouble – like being out alone late at night or getting myself involved in sketchy or unsafe situations/people – I trust my gut!), but traveling alone has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life, and has taught me so many valuable life lessons.
And now, here I am in Bali. Living my best life. Meeting amazing people. Creating beautiful experiences for myself. Putting myself out there. Making my own memories. Experiencing, learning and growing. It’s an absolute dream. For me, this is the ultimate form of self love and it has changed my life.
Solo travel is a luxury and if you ever have the chance, try it at least once in your life! You will thank me.
